I created a sitemap file that's 2.5MB in size. Is this too big? If yes, how should I break it down?

Yeah its big. New sites as far as i know get max 100 pages indexed. So if its new, put in your site map your first 100.

2.5 mb? just curius, how many pages?

It's not a new site. Does that make a difference? It's approximately 30,000 pages.

you can even gzip compress your sitemaps... have you checked to see if your sitemap is really correct?

Make it more structured which will help google to crawl effectively.

I think this is huge.... Try to segregate to some limit...

Try to have different categories in different pages... In this way you can give more pages within sitemap... See google sitemap and you will know...

url with 50,000 maximum is good...if you have 30,000 pages then it fine. there should be no issue.

The max size is 10 megs uncompressed. That used to be listed on the Sitemap FAQ but I can't find it right off. For reference, I point you to the WordPress Sitemap generator plugin designed by Arne Brachhold which also includes a broken link to the FAQ:

    http://www.arnebrachhold.de/2006/04...temap-issues-errors-and-problems/#P28_maxsize

I see this mention in the Google Webmaster support forums as well:

    Hope this helps,

It's an xml file and the format is correct. I submitted to google and it was accepted without any errors, the exact number was 33,379. Thanks all :)
