Put up a custom 404 page first. Then check through your site map and remove those pages.

You can also use .htaccess to tell google not to crawl those pages.

Someone told me that Google removes 404 error pages by itself. Is this true?

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Then when you've thought they did, 3 years later and they will show up again. Google likes to relive the past occaisionally.

I'd take advantage of google wanting to crawl the pages and put up a page with a 301 redirect to a page that actually exists and has value. That way if there are any links pointing to the page that is gone you can take advantage of any value it may have.

Like Prez said custom your 404 page then put robot.txt to your page so googlebots wont crawl your page.

Best method is to 301 redirect those pages to the appropiate replacement pages and list the 404 pages within your robots.txt file

This is exactly what I've done in the past. Why lose those links Google is looking for, create a 301 redirect!
