What's the verdict on this? Good or bad? Why?

Google Sitemap will help to index site fast. It will not have bad effects as long as it will be in google TOS.

Great, thanks. I've just heard bad stories of sites dropping out of thin air because of the site maps - I'm just not too familiar on the whole "sitemap info".

    Thanks for the reply,

    Mike

I created a site map on Dec 26th but have not seen any increase in indexed pages. My site is barely a month old so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. The only page that shows as indexed on google is the home page. Now MSN on the other hand has every page indexed already. Kind of frustrating but I don't know what else I can do other than give it time.

So I have yet to see any benefit from the sitemap but I don't think it has hurt me either.

I have been using site maps on my sites for about a 6 weeks and i have seen no increase in indexed pages at all, I think G site maps are a waist of time a site map on your site is much better.

Go, create a sitemap. Even if they they are not that useful, they will do no harm to your sites.

Here you can find some good sitemappers >

    code.google.com/sm_thirdparty.html

    cheers.

    Never noticed any changes.

Bot usually finds its way through my sites as they are less complicated.

It won't hurt, but then again a properly designed site with some backlinks won't need one.

doesnt need to be a google sitemap. just a normal sitemap will have google index your site too. Sometimes they work and sometimes they dont. These robots are sometime drunk when they crawl your sitemap. Pls forgive them.

If you have a directory of some sort on your site that basically list in raw html (not php, asp, etc etc) links to all of your content (read: database content), wouldn't that be enough?

    sitemaps are great.

I have dynamically generated sitemap (with PHP)

Google checks it almost every day.
And it really helps to scan ths site.

There are pages indexed by google, but not MSN

2 weeks after submitting my site map to Google my site was banned. For close to 3 years I was #1 or #2 on all major keywords, now I can not be found on Google. 4 months and still waiting.

First I want to make it clear that I was breaking the rules by using doorway pages and a link manager, but I believe the site map is what brought it to their attention.

Could this free Google Site Map Down Load Tool, actual only serve as site buster.

Well, I as well have not seen an increase of indexed pages or something but I still like the sitemaps for the statistics they provide about your site (available after you validated your sites and some waiting time).
