mmm dude I think you are looking for a sitemap to submit to search engines if so you definitely have to use a .xml format one.If you need a sitemap for visitors then your existing one is more than enough.

    Regards.

WE use gSiteCrawler to create our XML Sitemap . We also have a HTML Sitemap used by visitors. We also submit a sitemap Sitemap.xml.gz that is Zipped.

Your sitemap must have the XML format described at sitemaps.org:
    http://sitemaps.org/protocol.php

and the easiest way for your web server to serve the file as XML (to send the right header) is to give it an .xml extension.

It has to be in XML format so the .xml extension is 100% necessary

A site map (or sitemap) is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool for web design, or a web page that lists the pages on a web site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion. Also it helps when any search engine crawl your site for indexing. If you really worry about search indexing then your sitemap need .xml extension.
