    sitemap is a list of your website pages, so the search engine can index them more reliably
    sitemaps is not required as search engines can crawl your pages without sitemap
    you only need it when some pages that are not easily can be found - for example those linked with javascript or flash menus or hidden deeply in the website structure

    You have to submit your site to a search engine to get your site in the search results.
    You have to submit your site map to a search engine-to help the engine bot find our the pages and contents easily. It will also make some faith and goodwill of you to the search engine-i guess.

    sitemap is one file which having all links of webpages and once we submit that to google, they get all page links under 1 page, so crawling will be fast.

    A proper Sitemap is a graphical organistaion of your website so even deeply nested pages can be viewed with one click making the site more user friendly and ofcourse it helps the search engines crawl the sites more frequently.Sitemap is a must for big sites with complex navigation architecture.

    If you are building links to your important pages, Googlebot will find and index those pages without any sitemap. Sitemaps are good for getting your pages with no backlinks found by Googlebot.

    But in 2011, pages with no backlinks usually don't rank for much. Long tail keywords, maybe. But not much else.

    In a sitemap you place all of the links of your site that you want the Search Engine to know about and the pages that you want seen in the Search Engine results. These would normally be the pages that are very deep in your site that would otherwise be missed by the crawlers when they visit your site.
