Sitemap in Robots.txt

    Hi all,
    As you know sitemap in robots.txt tells the crawlers all the path of all pages. Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling.

    Now...Can anybody describes

    no.1 What is best , sitemap.xml or sitemap.xml ?

    no. 2 How can we ping to search engines ?
    that we have add some pages, add sitemap etc.
