Very true, not only will the sitemap not effect rankings it's not even a guarantee the pages listed in it will be indexed.

I just checked one of my long forgotten sitemap experiment domains, it's got 327 pages in the sitemap and only 284 are indexed. Out of those 284 indexed pages i have no clue what's in the index due good links and structure, or due to the sitemap.

I just gather a lot of data from Google's crawl behavior even if the site is problem free, if i publish a page and Google takes 2 days to index it that tells me something, if it takes 2 weeks it tells me something also.

Same if i publish 2 pages on the site, one in section "A" and one in section "B" and the one in A is sitting in the index in 12 hours later and the one in B takes a week it paints a picture of the Pagerank bias in the site. This can be used to your advantage, and to make things better.

How Google interacts with pages of a site is important for a number of reasons, and to distort those signals with another variable makes things harder for me. Getting pages indexed is easy, i will never need a sitemap for that.. So personally there's no reason for me to ever use one as it provides zero benefit and many negatives.

I guess it comes down to preference.

Speaking of rebuilding sites and Sitemaps, i'm experimenting with a self-reinforcing keyword/anchor system that works on the fly and creates a really flat file structure. I'll post about it shortly. :)

Send me a PM link regarding this in case I don't come accross it. Also, my experimental site will be going live shortly with those things we discussed while also providing some useful SEO information :)

Excellent, actually i remembered the URL and just had a peek. :D

Ok with this experiment i'm doing, it's a cross between two things.

The first "thing" is like a search engine referral tag cloud.

When some searches a word in Google, lets say "Digital Point" and clicks through and lands on the DP forum homepage the site logs the keyword or phrase in the database and creates a hyperlink with that anchor for example Digital Point in a cloud with other keywords and links people have searched and clicked through on Google.

This boosts the landing page by providing another targeted internal text link to it. So it's like a tag cloud but instead of tags you add, this set-up automatically creates them using the keywords you were found with in the SERP's linking to the page that was found.

Taking it a step further, you have probably seen scripts that will change plain text in to hyperlinks to URL's and keywords you define. I guess similar to Kontera.

This combines the two, for example:

You search Google for "XML Sitemap" and click through to this page. This is logged in the database, then when the term "XML Sitemap" appears elsewhere on the forum it hyperlinks to this page using that anchor.

So the result is nicely interlinked pages with rich anchor text in content just like Wikipedia pages, however you don't have to manually define keywords or URL's it's all done for you by Google. :D

That's why i say it's a self re-enforcing system, Google is telling you "hey you rank somewhere for this keyword with this URL" and you reply by linking a couple of other pages on your site to that URL with that exact anchor text to further re-enforce the rank.

Hopefully my explanation makes sense. So far Google is all over it, i'm just refining the control ie maximum number of keyword on a page to hyperlink, maximum number of links to any given page from elsewhere etc.

That shoulds really interesting, actually something that could work very well with my SEO knowledge database based on what you explained. I'm interested in see the results.
