Site with more than just 1 domain [Permanent redirect?]

    I've seen 1 site using more than 1 domain.
    If someone types www.12345.com it will redirect to the www.maindomain.com, but the display domain will still be showing www.12345.com.

    Does anyone know how they do it?

    The domain is parked over top of the main URL.

    And my friend told me that google search engine will penalize such domain. Is that true?
