I have been diligently searching the internet for high quality (PR) back links for my fitness site www.somagenesis.com Seems like lots of crappy scammer sites found on search. I realize that they cost $ but I was told my site really needs help with back links.:(

Any recommendations for the Seasoned Pro's?

    Much appreciated!

you don't have to pay money to get back links, you can get them from forum posting, submitting to directories and by commenting on blogs

I don't believe your back links are relevant to my web site's theme fitness.
Wouldn't Google ding me for this?

create articles and tips that can be very helpful to your visitors, and i'm sure, most of them will share it to their friends and some will link your site to their pages.

Always deversify the incoming links and slightly modify the text within the link text so that it does not trigger keyword filters. Here is a five-step approach to start with.

    (1) Get links from free directories of any PR or even without PR

    (2) Write and distribute several articles on your topic with 2-3 thematic backlinks per article

    (3) Paid links are also OK as long as they are from authority thematic websites and not 100% site-wide. If they are site-wide, there is a chance (reverse proportional to the site authority/quality/theme) of running into a zero-effect from them, or even worse, triggering a keyword filter/penalty.

    (4) Post relevant comments in relevant blogs

    (5) Use forum links but, again, keep in mind that keyword filter may become a serious issue here. If you have thousands of posts and replicate the same link title in all of them, it may trigger a penalty on that specific keyword. Forum posts are 99.9% irrelevant to your linked text, so the best bet here would be to use a non-dictionary noun in the title, for example, "SomaGenesis" in your case (one word).

I wasn't sure about paid links, until one post in the SEOmoz blog directed me to these Google Webmasters Guidelines:

Therefore, I don't really think Google likes paid links too much, so I try to avoid them and collect natural backlinks.

    Hope this helps a bit.

I agree with everything else, but you can skip the first step. Submitting to low quality directories (99% of all directories) is 100% useless.
You can build some real & quality backlinks in the meantime ;)

The point is, though, that "everything counts in large amounts", and even a low quality link has some microscopic gain for the site, as long as it doesnt trigger keyword filters.

Every time we launch a new website, we hire someone from GAF to submit it to directories. This is always our first step in link building, before the heavy artillery comes (authority sites and themaic articles).

Would you like to offer what is a good link now that you have rubbished a good way of getting free links.

I have used the free directorys to rank no1 for all local traffic, once I started picking up cheap leads these deals converted and I now have money to purchase quality links like BOTW and business.com. I can now focus on national keywords as I have the budget.

remember out of acorns grow....... :)

What about three way link exchange? - it looks naturally to search engine, pass page rank and you don't even have to pay... Paid links are good if you use them in clever quantity.

Any advertising on the provides backlinks. Take Oranges ad on Digg. Surely Google are not going to penalise Orange for "paying" for that link.

Does it differ if it is a bann/image link rather than a text link?

There are many ways to get links, both free and paid. I try to mix it up a little. Try to get both single-page and site-wide (sparingly) links from pages of varying PRs. Make your link profile look as natural as possible.
