Site unaccessible when updating the site (through FTP)

I have a site that's getting a fair amount of visitors every hour. The problem is that I've noticed that while I'm updating my site it's unaccessible (when I go to the URL I get a "Forbidden" error message). This is only while the program is uploading the new file - so it isn't for a long time, but there is a chance visitors won't see my website if they try to access it just as I'm uploading.

I'm updating the site through Dreamweaver (the file manager, aka. FTP program) - but I've also noticed this when uploading through a normal FTP program like FileZilla.

Do you know any tricks to prevent this "down time" when I'm updating? Any process I should follow, some special settings on the server or FTP program, a special FTP program I should use?

The site runs on Apache (if that helps).

I noticed something like this with Dreamweaver. It seems it's built-in ftp program can be a bit slow and tends to timeout alot.
When uploading it removes the existing file and if it is slow to upload the new one, then you may see some kind of error page.

Don't know if that's your problem or not

    Thanks for the reply.
Yeah, the FTP in Dreamweaver times out quite often...

Maybe it would be just better to upload the files through a normal FTP program?

    No problem.
Yeah, one thing I notice is if it times out while uploading then only half the file gets uploaded, resulting in some kind of error or blank page.

So now I rarely use it, preferring to use FileZilla
