Site Programming Dead End

    Here's the deal:

I've been trying to program a basic site for over 3 month now. I've gone to w3schools.com and learned all their tutorials on HTML and CSS, I've done countless tutorials around the web on CSS programing, but nothing seems to help.
I know all the tags in HTML, and I know full well the tags in CSS, but I just can't put them together to make a site!

I'm trying to do a table-less format (which his apparently the more "politicaly correct" way of designing a site layout), but I just can't get the layout right (I couldn't even do that WITH the tables).
Im not sure if I can really explain this over this post (if I see people are taking interest in helping me I'll probably go into "specifics") but I've tried downloading templates, and learning from the templates what to do. But in the end it ends up with me sitting and copy pasting lines from the template into the page I'M trying to format...and if I'm going to run a site I can't rely on copy pasting from templates.
I've tried just, messing around. But again, I can't get the layout right.

In other words, I'm pretty much at a dead end.

So I wanna know if theres anyone on the forum who knows a thing or two about site programing, and could give me some advice

I'm really serious about building this site, I put all the time I can into it (although school has been rough recently), and its killing me that I can't get the hang of it

    Please Help!

P.S I'm sorry if I sound dislectic throughout this post, its 4:30 AM here in Jew Land and I'm too tired to go over everything I've just said XD

P.S.S I have Dreamweaver CS3 if it helps you somehow...

    Thanks in advance guys <3

Make a move, preview if it's what you like go on if not change that move until is what you expected, then go on to the next div or so. If it doesen't work, practice some more, try to modificate templates at first then you'll get the hang of it :)

Simply do a Google search for "three column tableless template", and pick up a free template - start with that and expand from there.

In years past that's exactly what I did... but to be honest, nowadays I tell everyone to simply pick a good CMS at opensourcecms.com and start learning it. I like Wordpress and Drupal myself. Others have different favorites.

But you can put up a website on a lazy Saturday afternoon if you use a good CMS, and be drawing traffic by Monday.

Your knowledge of HTML, CSS, and PHP will come in handy, tis true - I always recommend that people learn the fundamentals... I could never code from scratch the websites I put up nowadays - but the ability to 'tweak' them to exactly what I want comes from my days of handcoding websites.

    Best of luck to you!

P.S. re-read your post... a short note - don't try to take a good tableless three column template - and pull code out of it to move to your webpage efforts... do it the other way around.

Take the template - and put your content into it - and starting with a template that has your fundamental website 'skeleton' already (go to www.ibdjohn.com/csstemplate/ to create one), you'll avoid the mistakes that you may have in your own webpage efforts.

But I digress... for most people, a good CMS is what they really need.

I've tried some of the templates, but I'm having trouble.

When I get a template with a left column for example, if I want to add something to that column, the writing thingy starts at the CENTER of it, but I want to do it on the top...any tips?

Hey, if you got Skype or gtalk, I could help you with your layout like explain some things, fix your errors, show you how to put divs together. Good luck!
