What can you do if a website owner lies about the earnings of a website? Obviously what they get paid is based on the supposed income of the website.

Theres not really much you can do im afraid unless you put something in writing protecting you from this very thing, then you would be able to sue but collecting from a lawsuit is in itself a whole other can of worms.

How far off were the revenues?

You could sue them for misrepresenting their product. How did you pay for your purchase?

Approach the seller from the point of view that they may have mistakenly miscalculated the revenue. If you call him a liar from the start, you'll only raise things to an uncomfortable level and severely limit the chance you'll win him over to your point of view.

Yeah if you paid by PayPal not only can you file a complaint but if you funded the payment with a credit card you can do a chargeback.

The thing with Paypal is that they dont give refunds for "virtual goods"... You can do a chargeback, but legally, the credit card companies are bound by the terms of Paypal, which means that eventually you'll still end up paying that money. There was a post on another forum where this exact issue was discussed. Someone had filed a chargeback and the bank issued him his money back, but 8 months later there was another charge and the bank said they couldn't do anything, because they were bound by Paypal's terms and Paypal had determined that a refund wasn't warranted.

Overall, Paypal isn't a very safe way to conduct transactions for virtual goods.

Also in the case of buying a website with reported revenue, you'd have to specifically prove that the seller lied about their previous revenue, because there are lots of circumstances that could legitimately cause a site to stop earning after the sale. Like losing SERPS or some other unforeseen reason.

It sucks to be in this situation though. Maybe a good old fashion legal threat will be enough to scare them :) Best of luck.

More details would be nice. What did you buy and for how much, and what is the actual income and what was the said income?
