Site offline - do I need to ping Google to have it dropped?

    I disengaged one of my domain from my site and have it appeared as "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage", which I think is similar as a 404 not found. Do I need to ping Google to have it removed from its serps?

    404 is enough.. google can recognize it..

    Google will eventually pick it up. Although some of my previous sites still had the homepage indexed after months of it being down. Is there any particular reason you need it removed from the SERPS?
