Site not recognizing index page showing default page?

After Drupal installation I needed to put the index.html after every url of my site to see the page. If I plainly put www.somedomain.com/clients it won't work. I have to put www.somedomain.com/clients/index.html

Now even after Drupal un-installation it keeps continuing. Now people who visit site can view only the default Apache page since it is not recognizing the index page.

It will work only if we put www.somedomain.com/index.html

I guess you know what I mean. What might be the problem? I tried changing the .htaccess too. Thanks for your time.

Since the index file is php

I have added this line with the .htaccess code as you can see.

    DirectoryIndex index.php
    Code (markup):
The .htaccess file is in the root directory of my site and it doesn't have .txt extension.
