site not ranking despite some work!

I have recently been doing some work on this site kennelsforsale.co.uk which was not ranking for the key phrase 'kennels for sale'. It ranks very highly in bing, yahoo etc but not in google.

I did quite a lot of 'basic' stuff - submitting to google, xml map, preferred domain. The site had the same title on every page, which I altered adding in 'kennels for sale' and also putting it into the body text on the pages and altering the h1 tags. We have also worked on our backlinks.
This was all done about a month ago and the site is still not ranking for "kennels for sale" but ranking highly for "kennel sales". We have a page rank of 1/10. What depressing is that I notice one of our competitors ranks first page. I don't wish to knock the them because they are clearly doing something right ...

I realise the SEO work is an ongoing process but what I want to know is why isn't the site ranking for this term, and what to try next.
    Many thanks

I just took a quick look. Here are some of my findings:

    1. First thing I noticed is your back links are a bit over optimized. This may have triggered a google penalty. Your site is still Indexed in google. So you may be able to fix this.

    2. Your on page SEO needs a bit of work as well. I would improve the Title, Description and Meta Tags. Include some pics and videos. Google loves these things at the moment. Don't over do it or you will get penalized.

    3. Link out to authority sites. This is a must. You want Google to view you as an authority. This is what authority sites do. They link out to other Authority sites.

    4. Focus on Relevant High PR Back Links.

    5. Control the Link Juice on your site.

    Hope this helps,

Many thanks for your reply Carlo. Would you be able to show me one of the back links that is 'over optimised' - then I can see what you mean? I am working on point 2 - am aware that the content is a little 'dull' frankly!

    Thanks again

I'll be away from my computer most of the day. But if you want to pm me your email. I'll send you a graph of your Back Link Profile. We should always try to keep the KW we target private.

As for your on page SEO. You have your keywords:

    Kennels, For, Sale,

    It should be:

    Kennels For Sale, KW2, KW3,
