Site not appearing on Google for specific phrase, but appears on Bing

I'm a developer with limited knowledge in SEO.

I'm not looking for a direct solution (I don't expect people to do my job) but I'm looking to understand how I can research my problem.
Any help that can be provided to help me identify where to look for an answer to my problem is most welcome.

I have a site that does not appear on Google results for a specific phrase whereas using the same phrase, the site is on 2nd page in Bing.
    Facts:
    • Google Webmaster Tools does not show any crawling errors.
    • A search with site:mydomain shows all pages as indexed.
    • 1st result when searching for site's name is (as expected) the site.
    • Searching for the phrase plus the site name again brings the site as 1st result ( I believe due to the fact that the site name has been provided, the phrase at this point will probably be irrelevant, correct? ).
    • The phrase brings 70 pages of results and at the last page Google shows this "In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 695 already displayed."
    • Many results are coming from sites that are included as Ads in 1st page.
    • Site's PR is 3, PageSpeed is 88/100 and validates according to W3C whereas the site that appears as 3rd in results has PR 0, PageSpeed 91/100 and does not validate (it even uses table layout)
Where and how I should be looking to find out what is happening?
    Any ideas?

Thanks for your time in advance.

Apparently, my site has started appearing in Google results for the keywords I'm interested in.

I have done only minor changes to the site.
No fresh content or anything like it.
Just tried some optimizations for loading times.

My issue now is the position of the site which is at page 36.

There is one thing that it's not very clear to me.
Since I haven't done any important changes in my site (like adding new content or modifying existing content) and Google decided to include the site on results for specific keywords, if I don't do anything SEO related, is the position going to get better as time goes by?
I can understand if the position is going to get worse if other sites are 'better' than mine, but can the position on search results get better if you don't do anything on the site?

    Thanks

Most of the time if you search for your brand name + key phrase Google will pull that page from your site because you specifically told it to look for two things that only your site could really have. Where your Ads are positioned has absolutely nothing to do with where you are positioned organically. One you pay for, the other you have to earn over time.

One of the many ranking factors (approx. 200) that Google uses when ranking a site is domain age. It's possible that as your site sites, ages and gains trust naturally over time the page will start to do better on it's own in the search engines. That might explain why you saw the uplift without actually doing any SEO. Obviously it is indexed so chances are it was just deeper in the search results for some time and has gained a little extra traction. You can only optimize a website so much to make it "better" in the eyes of the search engines so the next step is to focus on on all the offsite SEO work including link building, social media marketing and content marketing.
