Mainly to make it easier for Search Engines to find all the pages of your site and index them.
When you make one or change one dont forget to submit it!

A sitemap shows you the way that a particular site's structure is built.
Simply it enables visitors to identify various pages in your site well. If you submit a sitemap to search engines that will enable search engines to crawl your site better.

If your site has many pages, then the use of sitemap is good to allow visitors to have a clearer view of what your sites' various pages. The application of sitemap is also very good for Google to crawl your site looking for new links. Therefore, increases your new page index in search engines.

Sitemaps inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. A sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL (when it was last updated, how often it usually changes, and how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site.
