    depends on the size of your site. If you have a huge site, it would be a real pain to make it by hand. In any case, and in the worst case, use a tool and then manually edit the file if you think you can tweak it. Remember though, sitemaps help but don't guarantee results. Don't forget you can submit a sitemap to more than just google.
