Site looks ok to me but not to everyone

I recently finished my website and asked some people to take a look. Most said it looked fine (irrelevant of content) but a few said that the text was littered with "?" where other punctuation marks should be.

I believe this stems from originally having my site text in MS Word and converting it to HTML.

What I don't understand is why only some people see the bad characters whereas for others it looks perfectly okay.

Any ideas or pointers as to how I can fix the problem and then be assured that site looks OK for everyone.

    Thanks in advance

Depends on what character set they have installed. I have this issue when clients send me word for content and a copy and past it. Some things like ' and ... don't get converted so they show up wrong. I can see the page fine though. Get the user that sees the ?'s to take a snapshot so you can track them down.

ditto to detz, and also it might depend on their browser. some browsers read things funny and you have to track it down and see where the problem is
