Site launched as .com (uk target market)-Should I have used .co.uk? SEO Implications?

I have just launched registered a .com website, which has been operational for about a month now (www.nutsaboutdance.com). The site was built for my sister and is related to dancing lessons etc.

Initially the target audience will be uk based and targeted, but in the longer term she may try to use her contacts to expand outside of the uk. Therefore I registered the site as a .com to give it a more global “feel”.

My question is whether this will hinder the sites chances of obtaining good ranking for its keywords in the uyk. If I search fo say “memory cards” on google I notice that 98% of all sites are .co.uk with the exception of large sites such as dabs.com.

So if I do 50 hours of SEO and get to page 1 for keyword X with a .co.uk, is there a suggestion that if I put in the same time with exactly the same site (and site content) but as a .com, that it would not achieve the same positioning just because it is a .com???

p.s. when I start a thread, I usually bundle up the answers I get into a tutorial for my blog seo for biz. If anyone knows of any useful url resources on this topic then the urls would be much appreciated also.
