Despite having great content, I think my site is not getting upped in google search because the site is getting indexed without www in its name. I don't get it, why isn't www appearing in my website name in google search.

It really doesn't matter whether you have www or not. Go to Google Webmaster Tools, submit your site and after verifying it you'll be able to choose whether you want www in your site name or not.

No matter if your site is with or without www but it is important to stick to only one solution.

It has no problem whether your site has www. or not . just remember your site still have the same priority to the search engine no matter the form of your url is. But you would better to use http://...... each time to submit your site.

Thanks to all of you. Just one more thing. I don't know. This maybe silly....!
While submitting articles or adding back links to the directories, is it advisable to add http:// to the site name like http://sitename or just plain sitename. I think there is a difference in both because links:http://sitename and links:sitename yield different results.

A permanent redirect should be set up with a htaccess so google etc doesn't see it as being two sites.

I personally prefer to not show the www in search engines listings. the less clutter the better.

Use this in a .htaccess file but, as the above poster mentioned you want to do this in webmaster tools as well.

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example.com
    RewriteRule (.*) http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]

make sure to replace example.com with your domain.

    hope that helps,
    Nigel

"If you build it, they will come." is a lie, you need to take charge and build links/buzz about your site. Get some social networking going, submit some articles, get signature links, buy links, whatever. But simply put, just content and no roads to it means no traffic.

Another thing to add. Even if you set up the 301 Redirect, like Nigel Lew advised, keep consistency in your future backlink's urls: 301 redirect to without www - backlinks to be pointed to the urls without www.
PS. Some experts believe that 301 redirect also passes the link juice, though.

if your site is new or the domain was parked in somewhere without www on the site address, it will take sometime for google to crawl you blog again to index your home/inner pages with www. and remove other pages without www. the best way to get it faster is to build some good backlinks to it. If you blog are of great content google bots would find you. IMO you don't need to do something mentioned above.

Change the setting in Google webmaster, select with www option for your url. Also get backlinks with www in url. 301 redirect is also a best option.
