site indexed but not ranking?

13 days ago I started to promote my my new domain. Previously I had a 301 redirect on it to another site, let's say www.theirdomain.com. Till day googlebot indexed my site , and the google webmasters tool approves confirms that.
    so when i do a "site:www.mydomain.com" it shows a result for www.mydomain.com
    good so far
but when i search for www.mydomain.com it shows www.theirdomain.com

anyone experienced the same thing in early stages?
is this just a delay or a penalty?

This is just a delay, i think. You must wait some time.

do some social bookmarking in stumbleupon, propeller and digg to get it indexed early. I did the same and my blog got indexed in 10 hours of posting my first article.

    Thanks...

You need to add more backlinks to your site. And make sure use anchor text to let Google to know that you want to target a keyword for your site.

You are redirecting from an older domain to a new domain. It is normal that Google shows your older domain, because it has more value than your newer one.
