Site from scratch vs established site

Ok, here is my quandry. If I have a fixed budget of, say, $100 would I be better off to get a couple of custom made sites or get a site that has been established a little while?

I have seen a couple places where someone was offering to build custom sites from scratch for $40 to $50 with a few "unique" articles that would need some proof-reading.

But, the "established" sites for <$100 are usually just about the same. They seem to have little traffic and have been around for only a few months.

What do you think would be the better route for establishing an income stream?

Also, how much do you think I would have to spend on a site to get some content, a little traffic, and ~$1 a day in revenue? I am thinking a static, content type site.

    Thanks!

I'm a little new at this but it seems to be better to buy a site with some traffic if you are new and the reason is because you don't have to work as hard to get people to adopt you already have some people to leverage or spread your sites message. New sites will have no one to push to so you will be starting from scratch and not only spending money on the site design content and promoting it. As far as content put post on forums like this one and see if you can get anyone to show some work for you to check the quality of their work. Hope this was helpful.

You'll get a better deal if you build the site yourself, but I don't know anyplace that you can get an established site for 100$

I don't think you'll find a high-quality site going for $100 — so my vote is establish a site of your own (that interests you), and put the money towards marketing, or paying authors/contributors.

I'd save the $100 and start my own from scratch, mainly because you can set it up how you won't without really losing any visitors.

Yup, I have to agree. Start from scratch, dont settle for less. You have a very small budget, and to go off spending 40-50% of it to get rolling could break you faster then strecthing your hundred by doing the work yourself.

If this means learning a lot of things like coding, graphic design the works...Get more capital and work on the IDEA and business plan while you save a chunk.

My best advice to you regardless though, is do not quit and let no one tell you its not possible.

I appreciate the advice and tips.

One quick question, how much do you think I would have to spend to get an "established" with maybe $1 a day coming in? And, I mean coming in without those spyware zango or whatever their called. I would want something for the long term, maybe not pass it to my kids, but something that could last a few years at least.

    Mencius,

Getting $1 a day revenue from ad's seems like a project in itself. You will need good converting traffic, and great content. From their multiply and grow.

Your first project should be getting the site rolling at the least amount, but without hindering quality.

most likely the custom script will be nulled OR maybe the person will customize something like Joomla....but to build from 0 to a full CMS for $100 ? i'd like his number please.

i have to agree, building your own is better for long run.

I am really new to the content and ad revenue side of the web. I did alot of ecommerce stuff, but have not had to rely on ads, well, ever. I did not realize $1 a day from ads was a fairly big challenge.

I truly appreciate all of your input and look forward to a fun time with it all and chronicling the travails of my saga here through questions for the collective wisdom...

If the budget was $100, I would start a site from scratch because you probably won't get a quality site for that amount.

How much do you think it would cost for a low-end, quality site?
