Site failed automatic validation - 404 Error

I have a site that has all pages with the proper links and the links are showing up fine.

But, I keep getting "Site failed automatic validation".

The pages it refers to are old and no longer listed, but they may be on the engines. To help with this, I've made the 404 error code (404.html) identical to the HTML that is on the index page.

Everything on the page shows up as if it were the index page, but the DP links are not there (again the HTML includes the DP script and is the same as the index page).

Please tell me how to get the script to be read on the 404 page. Or, at least how to get the site validated. PM me if you need the URL.

PS - I went through and created new pages to reflect the pages that were being reviewed for validation (but failing). To force through a validation, I applied the index HTML to each of those pages. However, next time it runs across an out of date page, it will fail.

    Hi-

I never got a reply to this, and it continues to be a problem.

Why won't erroneous pages verify if they are 404 redirected to a page with LV code on it?

    thx

LV code on it? That might be the problem, you can't use both networks at the same time

Sorry about that. No there is no LV code on this site. It has the DP code.

As far as removing the sites from Google, it really isn't an option. There are hundreds of the old pages, and we put new hundreds of pages up frequently, then take hundreds of pages down right afterwards.

You could put ads on your 404 page then I suppose...

Thanks. I did put the DP commands on the 404 page. (it has the exact HTML as my index page). But, for some reason it does not show the DP ads after going through the 404 page.

Are you saying that if I just put the resultant ads on the 404 page (not the DP code), it will work?

no, you need to put up the code on a 404 page so it shows the ads just like the rest of your pages

Thanks, Fry - But I have -- Exactly identical code on my 404 page that is on my standard index page. BUT, if an out-of-date page is selected, or a non-existent page, it just shows the index page, but with no DP links.

Whatr do you mean? Why would it show your index page? Are you doing some kind of redirect? Could you post an example url?

Thanks. I do not want any redirection - no temporary for engine penalties, and no permanent redirect, because I would have to redirect every single one of hundreds of pages everytime we re-generate.

What I am doing is putting my index page HTML (exactly the same HTML code that is listed on my index page) on the 404.shtml page.

This way anyone clicking on any page in the engines that is no longer available (or DP checks for verification) they will get an identical page to our index page.

However, the DP code that is on that 404 page is not working. It is not showing the ads.

Check out all your pages, on some of them you are getting an error from the code, and it seems that you aren't parsing, you'll neet to parse the .shtml page to get the code to show on it.

    YOU ARE THE FRYMAN!!!

Thanks. Never thought to check the parsing for shtml too. I'll adjust all sites.

    Thanks!
