I guess I'm an accidental genius then because some of my designs are ugly without even trying to hard On the serious side, while really slow pages suck, it appears that download speed of the pages is not what makes a site "slow" There is a great article on User Interface Engineering about download times and *speed* of a site http://www.uie.com/articles/download_time/
So.... After we spent 3 pages discussing how the guy did it- Who is actually buying the $10K a day B.S.?
Well I checked the site and it shows 6500 online visitors. perhaps 5% CTR are 325 clicks right now. Not sure if there are always the same visitors coming to his site.
Seems to me that with that traffic and those SERPs the site could be making more from Adsense. Perhaps the design is not really helping at all. Who's to say that a better looking site with left hand navigation interspered with Adsense blocks wouldn't do even better? Interestingly, my best Adsense performing site is also fairly ugly.
wow, that took some good time to load... About the page is refering to, I'd say that's normal. He took a keyword that is paying (dating) and just made some quick dating script and got people to register. Then the rest of the job goes by itself. Makes me think I should do the same, but with a better interface...
I think it may have taken a bit more work than that... from my experience nothing does the job by itself... not even after a while. You gotta keep advertising, and talkin to people, and optimizing, and so on... never will u have a website where you just sit back and earn money,... unless its incredible...
Right, this is prob off-topic, but people who do make $10,000, $5,000, $50 The ads on my site are basicly by the same companies, or the same 3 or 4 companies. All the time. Does this not mean that company is getting massive adsense bills? Or does google keep changing the ads when a site is really popular, to make sure advertisers dont folk out massive ammounts? Sorry about being O/T, just would like to know. Cheers.
PPC for Dating keywords are upwards of 7 dollars so I can understand them making that much money. Plus you've got a core regional base (Canadians) of visitors and the community automatically gives them useful free content. A site like this isn't really dependent on search engine traffic as much as it is word of mouth. I think it's success has more to do with it being one of the first free dating sites based in Canada than ugly design. The ugly design probably keeps server costs down. I never realized how much money you could make giving stuff away for free. It probably makes getting traffic that much easier plus you can always have google ads as your source of income and affilates off to the side.
I almost forgot. The URLs are Search Engine Friendly. That Helps a lot too. See the URL ends in .htm: http://www.plentyoffish.com/member1405723.htm While most dating sites url's end like this: http://www.azdg.com/scripts/AzDGDatingPlatinum17x/view.php?l=default&id=0000000542
I've seen ads for that plentyoffish site on mine several times. Then I read about the amount it makes off adsense daily. I couldn't help but feel a tad jealous. I will get there!
I don't see what is wrong with this site. Design is not wery nice but I don't think that site owner and visitors care much about that as long as site is useful for them. If one have good content on the site design is not that important.
An interview with the owner of the site: http://powerplayers.blogspot.com Looks to be an above-board realistic enterprise. Good for him. I love a good success story.
What spooked me most about this site was the automatic geo-targeting. One of my neighbors has this as her description, "I like to put midgets into boxes and shake them until they vomit."
Nothing to be spooked about! The geo-targeting is simply a more compiled way to gather the ip's of visitors and display ads that appeal to them. Not sure how it all ties in, but surely if you use a stat counter on your site you can see them already. You have no idea how many are using the same method that Markus is. I'm working on something similar myself.
