site:domain.com versus webmasters tools for determining indexed pages?

    When I do a google search for "site:mydomain.com" I get 133 results, all belonging to my domain. The SEO book I'm reading says the results of this is the number of pages indexed by google.

    BUT....When I go to Webmasters Tools, it says 12 pages indexed.

    Can anyone explain the difference between the two results?
