Single user wordpress or wpmu for news contribution website--What do you think?

Im hoping some veterans of this forum or wordpress gurus can help me here. Im wanting to create a site with multiple contributing authors under one brand or "look". Im using wordpress for single users and there are some plugins to help accomplish this but you know how plugins go sometimes. I understand that wpmu should be able to be merged with the single user version very soon. This is probably a dumb question--but what are some of the advantages of wpmu? Wouldn't that enable each blog on your site to have its own look...and so basically you are just a host for it? With all the admin headaches, what are the advantages? Basically I want people to be able to write posts and edit, maybe upload pics or video, but not change the pages or anything else--so basically they are just contributing authors. I know wpmu would allow users much more flexibility and so theres incentive to register for my site...but if they can blog about whacky subjects and their blog has a totally different look so it looks like a different site or brand, why would I want the admin headache??
Also, can anyone guide me as to the best plugins or platforms to help me accomplish what I want to do?
Thanks in advance for your guidance and insight.

You can try out Wordpress 3.0 beta, which now has wpmu with it. Giving authors their own blog means running each blog in separate sub-domains if that is ok then use wpmu or else use single blog.
