I have a fairly new site about stargate atlantis which I started in May. About a month ago, I realised my rankings in Google weren't climbing despite my best efforts to optimize content and acquire backlinks. I made a post at seochat asking for suggestions of what I could do. Within a few days, that thread was ranked higher than my site for my target keywords. Is this typical behavior of google? My site: http://www.pegasusgalaxy.com/ Target keywords: stargate atlantis
Yep, it happens a lot... Forums are pretty much authority sites (Well, big ones anyway), so a post about a particular subject is bound to perform well.
Even if the target keywords are mentioned only once on the whole page? I guess I am just surprised that sites with relevant content do so poorly while posts on major forums do so well. I know a lot of it has to do with spammers and how google tries to avoid them but still...
Yeah, your right. New sites are hard to get good results with... There are plenty of things that this forum ranks very well for while there are other sites that should perhaps rank higher... Look in the feedback category. You will probally see a few requests for threads to be moved because they are clashing with members websites...
Yes, I asked about getting a better ranking for a site once, and a few days later, the question I asked rated around #5 for the target phrase.
On one of our phrases, 2 pages that link to us, one PR0 and one PR2 rank higher than us. And a search for our company name recently started returning a whole bunch of pages talking about us rather than the site itself.
Hey Spacen I like your site. It helps that I'm a Stargate fan. Unfortunately, your predicament is quite common. With any luck, it'll drop to a lower position in the serps when the post drops from prominence (by way of distributed feeds and site wide feature components). I'm going to throw a few thousand links your way just to help things along a bit. PM me with details. (Yes - I'm a BIG stargate fan). Cheers, JL.
This is a perfect example to prove than in today’s SEO world as in the past, “content is the kingâ€. AS we have discussed many times before, don’t bother too much about excessively aggressive and dark SEO techniques. Work on your content, structure your site in a SE friendly way, provide enough depth, and constantly monitor your logs to adapt your site to your visitor’s behavior and preferences, and you’ll have a long term healthy relationship with SE’s and the traffic they provide.
I share your experience. A post I made at seochat now ranks on page 2 for lots of my target keywords, despite mentioning those keywords only a single time in a short list. Be careful what you post and where. Topic sensitive authority clearly has not been implemented or GG would know that SEOChat has nothing to do with our subjects!
The same thing happened to me as well. I've had to have a thread on this site moved for the very reason we're talking about. I've also done some link exchanges where the sites I exchanged links with ended up higher for my keywords than my site. arg!
i made the same mistake several times - now if i ever post about my keywords i use close analogies ei "miami villas" instead of say "orlando apartments " - my sig atill ranks pretty highly though for some reason DP seems to have some magical ranking ability
hmmm - I wonder if any SEO scheister is trying to rank for the keywords " magic ranking ability" - if they are they may well be about to lose the top spot to DP ! hehe
While we're at it, we might as well throw all of the popular keywords on here such as "sex", "mp3", and "Elisha Cuthbert".
I'm pretty ignorant about programming and forum setups, but could another possibility lie in the fact eh keywords were probably also imbedded in the anchor text of the forum's links to the thread?
That may a small factor, but it mainly has to do with the fact that digitalpoint.com is a *huge* site and it is PR 7 . When I 1st started my websites, this forum outranked me for my KW's simply from the KW anchor text in my signature. I don't mind though, it's better then a competitor outranking me .
