Single, expert article...marketing it?

I have been reading through old threads about article marketing and it seems like some people crank out dozens (or more) articles of dubious quality and submit them to multiple directory sites. From the various input, it does not sound like a lot of people are having success with this approach, though I may be mistaken.

Anyway, throughout my long career, I have usually taken a different approach to article marketing. I would write (or pay someone to write) an article on a subject matter that I (or the author) is expert on and then try to get a leading journal or trade paper to publish it for the recognition and "traffic" that it would drive to our company. These days, however, print publishers are down to very few pages and getting an article published with them is next to impossible.

So here is the situation. I have begun writing what will be a very good article for job seekers that ties in nicely with an area of my expertise. This will be a high quality article with a lot of good, unique content. So what should I do with it to maximize the traffic that my new website will receive from it? Is it all about SEO and backlinks these days, or are there places where a well-written, unique article will be read by many viewers, some of whom might be intrigued enough to visit my website and buy my related product (not yet released...this is all preparatory work.)

TIA for any or all input.

By the way, I forgot to mention that the length of the article can be variable. I can write it as long or as short as it needs to be, depending upon what is recommended.

Have you tried using the power of web 2.0 social networking/bookmarking and RSS to promote your articles?

Thanks, but no, I do not need that type of assistance right now. What I am looking for is suggestions as to how to best market my high quality article for traffic and buzz.
