Since we can't pollute the systray anymore let's trash the taskbar instead!

It didn't take long for app writers to figure it out...

It all started with systray being used to really useful stuff, but then printer drivers, mouse drivers, everyone, their aunt and dog started trashing it with ultimately useless icons (sometimes the context menu having only 2 items - "About" and "Close"). So in really bad cases one's systray could become larger than taskbar.

Ok, said Microsoft and implemented a system for selectively hiding stuff in systray...

However as years passed the amount of garbage increased so much that in Windows 7 Microsoft made yet another change - hide everything by default.

And finally when I though that all is nice and well. Software like Skype and Live Messenger started making their icons "persistent" in the task bar. The only way to get rid of the useless Skype icon is to completely shut it down.

I realize that it makes Skype a few extra pennies in case I want to buy a headset via their store. And the easiest way to get me to their store is to constantly nag me with a sticky icon. But man is this annoying...

I'd be actually willing to pay for IM to avoid this annoying crap. Too bad it's not possible... :(
