Simple questions about Google AdWords from a newbie

    Hi there,

I've never used AdWords before so would appreciate some basic help...
Say I want to get my advert listed at the top of the google search results for the term "peanut butter" - would this be a possible target, or is it hard to simply 'buy' your way to the top of the search results?

I would like my advert to appear on the google search engine when people search for things related to "peanut butter" (for example ;)) but I don't really want my advert to appear on other peoples websites (who are part of the adsense program). Would this be possible?

    Thanks for any help.

    Matt

Well, I'm not surprised you haven't had a reply yet. This is a big can of worms so I'm just going to touch on a few things and I'll let other posters to fill in the other blanks.

    • I recommend you use phrase match for your keyword "peanut butter".
    • You're probably going to spend about $0.80 click.
    • You will get a better ad ranking and cost per click if you have a good quality score. This will save you some money if you are trying 'buy' the top position. Here's how you can improve your quality score.
    • Your CTR plays into your quality score so here's how you can improve your click through rate.
    • If you don't want your PPC ads appearing on other websites, deselect the "Content Network" for your campaigns.

If you are looking for more pay per click help, check out Pay Per Click Reference. Good luck.

Yes this is absolutely possible. There is an option in Google that enables you to mention the URL s or sites where you don't want to display your adwords. In most of the cases it is the competitors, where you don't want to advertise, as they would tend to burn your money out as soon as possible. Take slow and steady steps...and you should be pretty successful in a few days time.

    Thanks

well said the only thing i would be concerned with is the term itself. "peanut butter is typed in almost 700 times a day. That can create a lot of traffic for you if you are number one position. However can you really convert this traffic? If you believe you can convert this traffic into more money then you are spending then you should definitely go for it. If however you are achieving a negative ROI = return on investment then you must reduce the bid and try to achieve traffic in another way
