I don't think you can do that because shapes are vector images and what's on a regular layer is usually raster. In this sense, the Photoshop team actually added a huge benefit when inserting this feature.

    dude
its not a matter of shape , it is possible i saw it on the photoshop top secret in which the guy was designing some header and he was working only on one layer
so i want to do the samething , i want to work only in one layer, there should be some configuration maybe a check mark or something which alow that but i dont know where and how?
it is possible thats a why that person was doing and when he want to add a layer he manually click on the button which creates layer , the later were not automatically added, i think now the point should be clear!

If u are not comfortable working with Multiple layers, just merge the layers after you have done editing with the new layer..

Or else, you can create a new Blank layer above all the layers, select it in layers palette, and press "Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E" This way, all the original layers are preserved, and the new layer contains the 'flattened image'

    Multi-layer works fine.

I bet things will go messed up with all items on single layer. You don't even have a chance to modify if the history is erased.

Do you mean when you're making a custom shape? When you have the pen tool/shape tool selected, make sure 'add shape to area' is selected at the top (the one with two solid overlapping squares). Not the single square, which will start a new shape layer.
