SMF is excellent. It has been good to me, thus far. And there are several huge sites running it without problems.

The ad management mod doesn't work for me. I had to manully edit the template and insert AdSense. (URL).

I guess that's a user error than anything else. Other than that, SMF is fine for me.

ivnj: May be 'forum' or 'community' is better than using the word 'smf105'.

SMF is definately better than phpbb. I've been using a phpbb forum on my music site for a year now. Aside from bot spammers its been quite reliable, but its very restricting as some mods can take you ages to setup.

I think i'll jump an evolution from phpbb to smf and just go with the daddy of forums - vBulletin, when I upgrade.

Am also using SMF on my forums.
Used phpBB in the past, but no regrets on changing ;)
As far as I'm concerned, SMF is the best free forum available!

I was going to start a forum recently. phpBB i have used before. SMF is better. So gave SMF a try. But gave it up as SMF doesn't have enough themes and plugins (being pretty new). :(

Is there an ability to import a phpBB database into SF? That would be awesome.

If anyone can convince me SMF (or phpBB2) is the best, you might win a cash prize :)

The best for what? I think each has some advantages. Some take more work to optimize than others. Some have more built-in features than others. Some have more inherent weaknesses. But in the end, it's largely a matter of personal preference, isn't it?

Try them all and make up your own mind.

    Very true
    Sorry, I wasn't clear.
I have, and I'm convinced myBB is overall the best.

Yes, personal preference is also true, but many people have never heard of myBB
IMO, if it was part of the Fantastico installer program, then myBB would easily have a huge user base.

I use SMF on one of my forums, phBBB on another. I prefer smf. Just updated it manually. Pretty easy stuff if you follow the directions!

phpBB had a nice run but I do believe it has become the dinosaur of forum software.

smf is a step ahead of many os forums. I would recommend it to newcomers. Its works flawlessly, installation is a breeze, and themeing and mod{ification} is something to look forward to
