I am starting with articles, blog posts, squidoo. I hear so many different traffic sources like press releases, directories, etc. I just want to make sure I don't waste efforts in ineffective methods. What should I do to pull traffic?
You haven't written anything about the nature of your site. If it's a blog, one of the best ways to attract traffic is to network with other bloggers writing on the same topic. Interact with them, comment their posts, even link to them from your own blog. In the long run this will expose your blog to a lot of readers.
You will have failures, you just have to implement techniques you read about and or try things on your own. You will fail sometimes it's just something you have to get used to and move on. The people who say this doesn't work haven't tried hard enough.
There's heaps you can do, just take the time read and take it in do it bit by bit though, alot of new bloggers tried to everything at once and get fed up you can check out my blog in my signature for more insight
You can try social bookmarking your articles to stumble upon, digg etc... they are a great source of traffic... u could also submit your site to quality directories...
Hey, I guess you going in the right direction....in fact you can try out the following (some of which you might have already done) to build links: 1. Directory Submissions. 2. Article Submissions 3. Blog Posts 4. Press Releases 5. Social Bookmarking etc. As a matter of fact, these link building methods would help generate traffic in a very limited manner. The main source of the traffic would depend on your ON page factors, the main being the content. I would not think any of the methods are a waste or ineffective, as they all contribute in the building of links.
Ok, simple basics, since you ask. Here are the three main things I have learned ... (i) The time to start thinking about and planning SEO for a site is before you design and construct it, not after (ii) All your plans should be concerned with getting targetted traffic: the road to just "getting as much as traffic as possible" is a complete waste of time, effort, energy and money for almost all websites (many people disagree with this one, but they're never big earners with really profitable businesses) (iii) The idea of just "getting as many links as possible" also leaves a lot to be desired: there's no great advantage in being on page 4 rather than on page 204 of the SERP's Just my perspective.
Social bookmarking sites are helps more increase traffic, and do article posting, it is helps to you.
Those basic stuffs you have said are good for beginners. Just do them properly! Future techniques would be revealed to you if you keep on reading and searching. To pull traffic, email-marketing is one of the effective methods.

Before you do anything else, go back and make sure that your on-page SEO is good. 1. Accurate title tags with keywords 2. Call-to-action description tags with keywords 3. Keywords in h1 & h2 tags 4. Keyword density in body roughly 2-5% 5. Optimize your on-page linking architecture
