I'll be buying a new domain name soon. I'm not going to say what the domain is because i don't want anyone getting it befor me.

something-domain.com is taken and is owned by a large corperation
    something-domain.net is not taken

Is it the same case with companies having similer company names

Is what the same case? You don't get around trademark infringement with a different TLD, hyphen, or adding words. It really depends on what the word is - but generally its infringement if the content of your site will be related to the company or in the same sector. You can't ride the goodwill of another company with a domain name that could be confused with them.
