I was wondering, if you have a link in your sig in a forum, and you post alot, will this increase your backlink count???

yea but you have to have a forum which has a high pagerank. DP is ideal and so is WHT and other boards :D

you would of course get an additional backlinks but because of easy spamming purposes, Google has toned down sig link's worth. ;)

So whenever I post I am actually making my site more popular? And by the way. What is the worth of a sig link?

I use links in my sigs a lot (if allowed) and get some traffic from those ;)
@ Scarface: The link of the PR3 free directory in your sig is wrong ;)

Sig links does will give you PR, traffic and more indexed pages for your site. But for SERP it won't help that much. Though the more indexed pages the higher the chances that you will appear on SERP ;)

it depends on the boards settings.. if the search engine spiders are threated as Guests, nothing will work, if they treated as Members, they will crawl the signatures too..

That's why I have a firefox user agent switcher. I switch to googlebot user agent and I see what the robot sees.

    what about

    1. When you submit a story to digg, reddit or any social bookmarking, does that count as a backlink and thus contribute to PR?
    2. When you post a comment over TechCrunch and you sign with your website, does that count as a backlink and thus contribute to PR?

I think I read somewhere that a link from a site like dp counts as 1 link. no matter how many times it is on the site. So yes you should get a value for dp linking to your site but it will only be counted 1 time. However the more you post the more people within the forum will see your link and then they might click on it. and if you are lucky they just might buy your stuff or click on some of your ads or w/e.

Also the pagerank of the forum adds more or less weight to the links value. Along with the fact that it should be ranked high in the community that your website exists.

if this is incorrect please somebody correct me. But I think it's correct.

I believe sig contributes enormously to get your site indexed faster when your are new on business, and get ranked as well
