Cheers for all the responses guys.. Is there any way to pin it down to exactly what has caused this apparent penalty? I believe that yes alot of the links i have built have similar anchor texts but many have been through directory submission and so I am unsure exactly how I can either..remove all these links or fix the problem? Do you think that penalties like this will wear off eventually?

If your website dropped to a lower page, that's no reason to stop building links, it's when it doesn't show up in the rankings at all except when you put the URL in when you should start to worry.

Remember, nothing a third party does can affect your website personally, that means, I can't specifically target your site as a means to get your site penalised and/or banned. So no, it's highly unlikely that, that's the course of your sudden drop in rankings.

Its always best practice to have a lot of content, that way your not too dependant on a small selection of targeted keywords. So continue to build links as well as content and you should be fine.

That is what I was thinking otherwise what is there to stop me buying up spammy links to my nearest competitors. I have updated the site and will continue to buy up more links and build on content and hopefully see a return to the top shortly. Cheers for that.

I would like to say this thread ha sbeen very useful to me personally. I didn't realize you could be in troube because of anchor text.

Looks like i need to change my game plan before it becomes a problem =)

Regarding the original question, i haven't been doing this very long at all but personally i have seen my site go from page one to an unknown page (before i knew about 1000 serp tools), and back to page 1 in a 3-6 week time frame.

not sure why it happens, but its happened with 2 of my sites.

It looks like a penalty due to aggressive link building campaign. Building so many links within a short time looks like a spam to Google.
