Signatures in forums.. a bad idea?

Hi sometimes I use my signature on this site as well as other webmaster forums which links to my website. My website is wrestling themed.. so would I get penalized on search engines for backlinks from this forum as well as other webmaster forums?

 

I do not think your site will get penalized, the links will little to no value for the search engines. However, if you post in the forums of a wrestling 'authority site' (the ones that high really high) your sig links might help you rank higher.

 

I use forum sigs to get traffic but as danielbruzal said above you really will get better ranked links & more targeted traffic if it comes from a closely related site. Probably wont get great traffic for your wrestling site coming from Digital Point

I do have signatures on a bunch of wrestling forums which I imagine will help my site out a lot. I just hope I won't get penalized for having my signature on a non related site like this.

How did you build that up ?

 

No matter where you have a link it can only help you get more traffic. People with all interests come to DP. Some enjoy wrestling. The best return will be from a wrestling site, but every bit helps.

 

you get penalized if they think you are using some automated link building, but signatures in forums looks for search engines like human posting of links.

 

You can get:

sometimes decent traffic if appealing
some PR
link popularity

but above all your link will probably be visited more often if it's from a big forum like this one

It won't help much with rankings though, relevancy in this case is rare and diluted, but it varies a little depending on topic...

Ok my main worry was just being penalized for having backlinks from the non relavent digital point forums. My site is doing well on google for different keywords so it seems it hasn't been penalized at all. I was just wondering if it would be penalized eventually
