I have a quick question that has been talked about here and there but I can't seem to find an absolute answer. I have an e-commerce site, to advertise that site I purchase a lot of forum sponsorship or vendorship programs so I can introduce my site and products. Here is my question, is it illegal or look down upon or will Google penalize me for putting my website address in my forum signature? I am talking about over 10 major forums (PR5+), and each thread has at least 100 posts all with my signatures in them. My signature consists of something like this Sales Rep Name Number Company Site
The importance given by the google for the signature links has come down over the years and only very few are considered as backlinks. Have your siggy links from as many forums as possible and tag it appropriately from the SEO point if view. You won't be penalized for too many siggy links but at the same time you won't be rewarded also in terms of PR. I have experienced this personally...
Google will not penalise you for having signature links on forums. These are free links and not paid (unlike the few)
it would depend on how new his site it. Getting a ton of links fast from a single site (or 5 in this case) can get him a penalty. Right now I've nofollowed my signature because I suspect I've been given a penalty for it. I mean....I don't see another reason why I would, other then 100+ links over night from dp
Myth imo. Myth, imo. The fact that you don't see another reason for it does not make it a reality; that's how myths are born. @dairyman, If the effective value of sig links has dropped over the years, I would submit it is due to the nofollow attribute and other methods that forums use to nullify the sig links. With those few numbers of post, it will not be harmful. But beware with huge numbers for google may mark this as manipulation.
I don't think google will penalize siggy links BUT also they might not give it any value to siggy links
I've seen steady improvement in SERP for "Sacramento Weddings" ever since I started using those words in my anchor text (below). There is no penalty for siggy links! Just keep on making anchor text links everywhere its free!!!
G won't penalise you I'm sure. If that were the case then it would be all too easy to sabotage a competitor's SERPS by putting them in your sig.
Hy. I'm sure Google will not penalize you. Regarding the result i doubt you will get any because I've tried that also but there was nothing special.
