Our local high school is selling banners on the fence of the field used for football, soccer, track and other events. I am thinking of buying a sign for $500 which I can write off. It's for my salary site which has a worldwide audience but I am in an area with a strong media influence. What do you think about this?
Duration of the banner ? And how would you define ''strong'' ? If there is an audience which comes to the events, and your banner is visible to one and all, it might make sense to buy a spot
The banner would be up for a year. So it would be ther for football season, followed by soccer in the winter, followed by track and field in the spring. I say strong because we are in an affluent area of Los Angeles/Orange County so there are media types or people who know media types in our area.
Then it does make sense. Does the place have a dedicated media centre? If yes, you could possibly try and get one right where the on-field reporter is. Good bet, i presume.
What action would you need to recoup your costs? For instance, would one person need to sign up, one product ordered, etc. You could also save a lot of money by printing out flyers and putting them on cars. The attention rate could be higher. Or you could do both.
I like the idea based on the number of people that would probably see it but MJ had some good thoughts on the recoup. I think in this particular case the sign would be better than flyers say though.
Recoup would be hard to measure. How do I track a visitor from the analog world as he enters the digital. Overall, I want people to think of salarymap.com when they think about salary related issues. The limited local reach makes it not so desirable. Then again if our team has a few extra injuries before the meet up with the other team in town that ranks sometimes in the top two in the nation and they blow our team away maybe we'd be memorialzed as the team with the largest loss ever ...with my banner there in pictures and youtube vids.
Dude if you have $500 you can throw at that, I'd do it... Reasons? Thats peanuts if its 5 to 10% of your net. LA ? More eyeballs there than almost anywhere in the world right? That's assuming parents make it to these games... and see your signage be it digital signage or not.
I'm assuming you have a good handle on your business. After your sign goes live, monitor the activity. The less advertising you're doing, the easier it is to track. It's not like you're doing a nationwide TV spot with direct mail and billboard ads. That would take much more work (and some guesswork). Make sure your sign is done right. In other words, don't copy market leaders with recognizable brands. For instance, Coke could just put up a sign that says Coke and nothing else. We all know what Coke is and all they are doing is trying to get you thinking about getting a drink--even if it's another soda.
I think it's a great idea - for just a tad over $41 a month - it's not too bad if you have the money. For me, I somehow always forget whatever sign I had by the time I leave, but obviously others are different. This goes for billboards as well - I'll see a great billboard and think that I have to check out the site that it is advertising when I get back home, but seem to always forget. What it does very well, though is build brand recognition and maybe at some point down the line I will remember to check it out. The key would be to have a really enticing sign - maybe finding a way to get people to check it out NOW on their Blackberry, phone or writing it down. In that regard, it might be good to have a mobile version that people can check out RIGHT THERE at the field. Or maybe an incentive such as "win cash" by filling it out and entering the contest. Always seems to get me! Just some thoughts
Most businesses who buy ad spaces for high school sports do it to support the school or sport, not to get conversions. I don't know about where you live, but in my community, buying an advertising space like that would be a waste of money. The same soccer moms would just see it over and over again.
How many people attend an event in general? I bought a banner at my local football club for £100, and they're going to be on a national TV channel for 90 minutes next week. I'm as happy as Larry
I think 500 is very good price for one year in such place. I would say go for it. Let us know how it goes, I am curious about these banner/billboard ads.
Being able to budget this advertising plan is simply a reason to research the idea, not a reason to pull the trigger.
Wow, £100! I looked around your blog and saw that you were a Man U. and Liverpool fan. Which one is giving you a banner for that price?
