Didn't many African countries accumulate debt by purchasing weapons during their civil wars? If so, what would eliminating their debt do, re-arm their militaries? Just asking, since many famine countries are the same one being run by tyrants and are war zones. tom
What has that to do with dieing children due to poverty? I agree that clearing debt is not the only solution to this problem - providing urgent medical equipment and medication is much more important.
Good question. What are you going to do? Give each kid food in each country with starving kids? Or just give the kid money? Either way his local warlord will take it, and kill the aid worker and the kid, or blow them up, or decapitate them, depending on the third world country you are in. Kids in poverty is only a symptom, there is plenty of food and clothes. The country, the leaders are the problem. And I might add, there are starving, dirt poor people in the United States, and probably in the UK. Charity starts at home. If I was destitute in America, and ill, or injured, I think I'd be pretty irritated with all this talk of helping the unfortunate, when 45million americans don't have insurance, lord knows how many homeless there are, or how many abused/neglected/starving kids. I'm with BobL and TommyD. Nothing comes free, let's not give away money unless we are certain it will be spent properly, and we should see changes in human rights before we give anything. We already prop up too many corrupt dictatorships without adding to the list. In many of these countries were famine strikes, food is not the problem. (i.e. somalia) it's the militants and warlords who horde the food and prevent foreign workers from distributing it. There is plenty of food in the world, if I'm not mistaken, America produces enough food to feed the entire world, but the problem is logistics of getting it into these places where people will kill you for not being of their tribe. They don't have to change, but they have to change if they want America and Europe to pay them. *end ramble*
