Sig Links

I've seen good success with my Sig Links - but only my first sig link. For an example - I would leave two or three sig links in my postings or comments - and have seen my first site travel quickly up the SERPs, but the other sig link or two wouldn't budge in the rankings. What do you guys think? When you list a couple of sig links - do you think the bots takes your first sig link - mark it as a "valuable link" because it's the first one listed, and ignores the other sig links?

That's a very good question... I guess I've never noticed or heard anything about it, but I'd like to know...

Another question: is it okay to post the same url in your sig with different anchor texts you want to rank for? Will this affect anything?

Possibly...could be like the recent data that suggests the closer your keywords are to the beginning in the title tag had a suprising large effect on ranking...dont remember how large that was butttttt....if you go to seomoz.org they had a whole thing on it, i think they also released the data in smx

no it doesn't. all the backlinks have the same chance of being followed. sig links however are not as effective as it has been in the past. these days they hardly provide any value. maybe for some realy low competition obscure term you mught find some benefit but for competitive terms, you have no chance of being ranked relying solely on sig links

I do not think bots rank the links as per their position and it does follow all the links that appear on a page, though it might differ in time and it is perfectly possible that links appearing on the top, get indexed fairly quickly over others.

As regards using different anchor texts for different links with same domain name, I think it is perfect legitimate way of creating different back links for the same site.

As far as i know the search engine bot reads from top left, so if it more top and more left then it will be more accounted for.

don't forget LSI keywords, the words that are beside the links.

Signature links are effective but it is important not to overload them or keyword stuff and as pc2dj said the words either side of the link text are important (makes it look like its in context)

Glad to hear that signature links are that effective. I rely on them so much.

I do not think google differentiates highly between the first and the second signature links!

At best, the first link gets crawled little quickly over the rest but the rest are crawled as well. I do not understand how the position of the links in your signature space would have affected your serps! :(

Arnt most forums/blogs etc nofollow now days anyway....

As such, the only benefits are:
    1) Getting your site indexed if it is not already
    2) Getting actual click through traffic from the link.

there is a number of forums which still offer dofollow links, DP or Namepros among others, so you can get quite a bunch of good links just for posing relevant replies in different forums

I think what you are experiencing is the effect in SEO, which some optimizers refer to as "First Link Priority". I suggest Googling it for more info.

They are helpful but large engines appear to be valuing forum links less than they once did :-(

But how many anchor texts are recommended within a single signature?
Is it counted as spam if we post more than 2 anchor texts?

Bot may crawl the first link faster than others but all are treated the same. I dont think this will cause an issue with the serps.

I actually, don't think link order even matters. To think that your first would get more weight than the others is a real far fetched speculation. I think as long as you have your keywords in your anchor link then you should get attribute love by the serps.
