Side or top menu?

I am working on a site overhaul and have decided to make my navigation menu and the design the site around how the menu looks. I was just wondering if anyone out there prefers a top menu or a side menu. If there is one you prefer over the other then let me know and also let me know why.

    Hi Adam,

Fortunately the menu's location doesn't matter much overall, with one important caveat - the amount of content in the menu (and by content I mean the menu links and the link text) and how well it can be resized via text zoom. Smaller menus (about 5 to 7 menu items) can usually get by via a top menu (especially if it's a dropdown menu system), whereas larger menus will have to be placed along one of the sites to prevent the menu from wrapping.

By the way, with regard to your JOTA site, please remove the Flash menu. Not only is it bad for accessibility (not everyone has Flash enabled or even installed), but search engines cannot crawl through the other pages on the site since they won't be able to find them due to the lack of a text-based menu (you can use HTML and CSS to create a similar menu though).

Yes. I was wondering about the flash. Guess I will have to figure out some java script to make a dropdown menu.

Thank you, I will check out that site. Trying to make one of the mouse over ones where it drops down when you have the mouse over the text.
