Placing images besides ad is against Google's terms. It would be better if we can see your url.

Anything that attempts to deceit visitors is a yes.

I believe placing a line between the ad and the image is okay.

That is indeed a violation of TOS. I wouldn't mess with that if i were you, since you can easily get banned if Google notices this, or someone reports your website for abusing TOS.

That will still be arguable, and could possibly cross the thin red line. Google made clear about their TOS regarding images near ads. If you'd put a line, you'd still be playing with fire, IMO. You wouldn't wanna wind up getting banned one happy day because of that, right ?

In one piece of correspondence about images by ads, the Google rep stated that a line was not sufficient. A full border was ok. Or at least at that point. But this was in relation to images which illustrated your page, but were near the ads, not just to pics put by ads- unless they have a purpose to illustrate your page, they would still be considered drawing undue attention to the ads.

Ask Google. Dummy up a page, tell them that it is not public and ask their opinion. I've done that and they've okayed images next to ads before. They can pretty much tell if you're doing it out of necessity or if you're just doing it do draw attention to the ads. If the latter, they will not approve it, but if the former, they very well may.

If they give you the thumbs up, be sure to save that email :)

The word Random, however, implies to me that the purpose is as an attention-getter for the ad.
