right now i'm looking to find some sponsors for my website. i hope to get a lot of private advertisers that would pay me one steady rate per month. but i'm not very knowledgeable about how that works.

the way i see it now, if a sponsor would pay me $100 a month .. i would put whatever ad they wanted on my site, and then provide a link to their site. to me that sounds like the easiest way .. but i'm thinking i would need to do more.

do i need to offer all clicking percentages and what not to the advertisor?? and if so .. how do i do that?

You set it up in different ways, not just one.

Also, ask them what they want, and if you can, do it for them.

I'm an advertiser. Let's see your site.

You should provide some basic information to potential advertisers, such as details about your site's traffic. But otherwise, since you're speaking directly with advertisers, just go ahead and ask them what information they need. Remember that all you're doing is selling something to regular people; no need to over-plan it, just ask!

well here is my site PSU Forums its been up for a little over two months now and is slowly but surely growing. I really hope to get the site off the ground this fall semester, but in the meantime I would love to have some advertisers on it. I get ~10k page views a month and around ~150 uniques a day. Let me know what u think.

Well in this case, you've got a very -- VERY -- geographically specific audience. I would go to local businesses that sell to PSU students (bookstores, grocery stores, bars, etc), let them know what your site is about, and work on getting them to advertise.

Looking for advertisers that are directly relevant to your audience is best for the advertisers, best for your users, and best for you.

josh that was my intent of creating this website, i was going to wait till i had a steady amount of traffic then go to local business and ask to adveritse, but i'm not sure at what point i should go and do that. i mean do you think my site stats right now are good enough to ask ppl to advertise on it?

Your site needs to develop more before you can branch out to private advertisers, IMO. More users, more posts...

You should be advertising your heart off on PSU's Facebook about your site, as that's definitely the place to spend your time online. Other than that...network around your campus. Get acquainted with clubs & groups, have them use your forum for hosting events and bulletins...etc.

yea i've been doing the facebook thing.. i'm gunna star posting in groups and what not instead of paying for advertising b/c its so expensive.

what do u think is a good number of pageviews a day to offere private advertisors? i was thinking along the lines of 1000 a day would be a good start

Since you run a forum, advertisers aren't going to give a damn about pageviews since that statistic can be easily manipulated (15 users each viewing 150 pages vs 150 users viewing 15 pages isn't the same thing). How many active members / daily uniques you have daily would be more relevant to advertisers. You don't need to offer CTR statistics since you have no advertisers to begin with and you can't make guarantees on that sort of thing at this point.

Visit other forums, and see what kind of ads they have. Contact those advertisers to see if they would be interested in advertising in your forum also.

But you should consider getting your repeat traffic up first. I'm sorry, but that's just not enough for even the lowest of advertisers.

In the meantime perhaps put in click ads that appeal to your kind of visitors?

Your best bet is to be an affiliate, and put in your own ads.

For your sports posters, there's this http://www.playitagainsports.com/

    and especially this http://www.sportsmemorabilia.com/

Put in a picture of an autographed baseball for an ad, as an example.

You want to increase your conversion rate? Put in nice, cool-looking pictures.

If you are looking to make money with a site, I would not do it with a message board as practically all Internet users don't visit them.
