Take a look at my site, I built it from a template and it actually did more than I thought a simple template would do, however I am struggling with SEO.

Wow, small world, I assume you have holidayed here previously?

If anyone is still reading this thread I will pass on some advice from a newbie who has graduated to whatever the next stage of hopelessness is, if you are interested.

My site www.buydress.com.au just sold $1000 in stock over the last week which is about $350-$400 profit (margins are smallish)

    1. I bought a pre-made template, it was professional looking and heaps cheaper than getting a custom one developed. Looking professional is so, so important. DO not be cheap when it comes to appearences.

    2. I got a logo for $30 through the contest section here. I think it looks pretty good.

    3. I have made 30 sales since i started (really improved last week) and only 1 sale paid via paypal. The moral of the story is if you are serious set up credit card processing on your site. You need an ssl certificate, (mine cost $30), and a company to process payments for you. Mine cost $200/year and $0.40 a transaction. People never leave my site to make a payment.

    4. Make sure your checkout process is simple and clear. Over 70% of my sales didn't register to buy, and went with a quick checkout.

    5. I get most of my traffic from google. I focus on a location (australia) and found it easier to rank well. Surprisingly results with lots of sponsored ads, get very few clicks. I believe that users are clicking on the top 3 sponsored ads, above my #1 placement. Focus on less competitive but highly related keywords.

    6. The secret to sucess. Well maybe not but it is interesting nonetheless. I was making 1-2 sales a week, when I made a few changes and made 1-2 sales a day. I am not even sure if these are the reason for the sudden improvement, or if its just a coincidence, but my traffic has been stable throughout the times.

    - Added an about us page
    - In the shopping cart I had shipping: free, in bright red letters (done by the programmer). It looked gimmike so I changed them to match the rest of the sites look.
    - Fixed up my product titles so now they run in correct size order in the search results
    - In the checkout process I fixed some appearance bugs (such as centered the image)

And that was it. As I said I am not an expert and this is my first ecommerce website. Hopefully though my insights may help others just starting out. If you have any more questions for me, please ask, because there is probably 100 things I have tried already on this site.

All your statements are very good and I'll second them. Your numbers are also very good. Might I ask what are you doing for marketing? I ran your URL through a bunch of seo stuff and found little... perhaps not indexed yet.

Goodluck with what you are doing:cool:
