Show me your smarts! Your ideas for hitting 100,000 uniques per day.

    Hi all!

I just started a non-obscene humor website in October:
    SayNoToCrack dot com
(sorry, for some reason I'm still not able to post links)

My goal has been to hit 100,000 uniques per day without spending much money (I've spent $20 so far on a contest). I'm now consistently at 2,000 to 3,000 uniques per day and the numbers appear to be trending upwards, but I was hoping for some ideas on how to get to an average of 100,000 per day.

If you were in my shoes, what approach would you take to hit this 100,000 uniques/day goal? This may seem like a big #, but humor sites have ridiculously low PPCs and CTRs, so even at 100,000 I probably wouldn't make much.

    Thanks!
    Anita

Id add more links at the bottom of the posts to social bookmarking sites. Seems like you update often, so thats good. 100,000 uniques per day wil be pretty hard to hit without spending too much, but I think you could do it for around $2k-$5k if you work hard.

    Hi Anita ..

    Great site!! Here's a courtesy live link for ya ... http://www.saynotocrack.com/ ...

    1) Firstly, 100K uniques will be a fair amount of work. I suggest you definitely hit the social sites like myspace.com. Build a profile specifically designed for humor. Find friends that are into humor ... for example if you go to "Larry the Cable Guy" profile he's got tons of friends and you can pick off a few hundred every couple of days. Its hard and tedious work but if you put it into your routine you'll see that it pays off.

    2) Secondly, I would suggest that you alter your "email this" page. Instead of having a script that only lets you send to one friend at a time I suggest that you use a script that will let you send to say 5 friends with one click. Funnies tend to be viral so give them the avenue to send to more than one friend.

    Good Luck!

Submitting some of your best posts to www.fark.com (or buying a classified ad linking to your whole site) might work out well, for the right kind of humour.

Great site. Not too high-brow or low-brow--dare I say middle-brow.

To hit your goal you need an original video to go viral with. Either find someone with the goods and arrange an exclusive or produce something. You seem like a funny person. You can do it!

    Good luck,
    Ty

100,000 uniques is a lot and it will make you one of the of the most pupular sites out there. I guess your niche of entertainment/humour is a good choice because there are significantly easier to draw visitors to than other types of sites. I have seen people with average enetertainment sites get at least a couple of thousand uniques.

With even 10,000 uniques per day you would be getting 50,000 page views per day. With a CPM of £2 you would get £100 per day. Thats pretty good if you ask me.

Interestingly, the average page views per unique for a site is around 2. Even Yahoo only manages 3.

Yeah, I get about 2-3 page views per person ... not surprising since my homepage shows the last 5-10 posts (so there's not much reason to click elsewhere).

I've been working on some videos, that's been my thought on how to increase the uniques. I was listed on Fark twice and Slashdot once, each time brough ~25,000 uniques and some of these stayed on (which I believe is why I'm consistently in the 3,000 range now ... as I was at ~300 per day before then).

Thanks for all the ideas so far!

Remember this if you start using CPM advertising. Less posts per page = more page views.

Non-obscene humor is GREAT while at work. Easy to share with co-workers, fairly safe to visit on the work pc without fearing something obscene popping up as the boss walks by, that sort of thing.. I have no clue what the demographics would be so to say, or if 100k uu's daily is feasible, but this site has a lot going for it, good domain name, clean content, nothing that would get you fired, yet there's some really funny stuff on there. Probably one I'll actually visit again from time to time myself.

My suggestion for the site is to get some good "viral" material that people would be compelled to forward to their coworkers via email. Like on your "office pranks" post on 11/26, I would guess it would be more "viral" if you wrote it more like "10 hilarious pranks to pull in the office" or something like that.. I know a big trick of all the major magazines is the use of numbers on their covers, not quite sure why, but numbers sell. I know where I work there are the typical couple people that send out all kinds of funny(or not so funny.. <groan>) stuff to our group of 10-15 or so, and there's always the couple people who send it off to their brother/sister/previous co-workers/neighbor's dog...

BTW, I enjoyed the article about google SE phrases that people had used to get to your site. My favorite was:

did your wife really fart - I’m sure we don’t have the answer!

LoL! Classic! I can't believe some of the crap people search for! (The infamous AOL search list had a lot of great examples of that..)

If your site is well designed and very catchy and updated daily then you may scrape 4 page views per visitor if you are very lucky.

But even then £2 CPM is rather alot. Most CPM companies pay around $0.25 - $0.75 CPM for banner ads and then you have to take out the large costs for hosting the large video files.

Earnings from CPM's is quite a bit more for popunders, but then you will loose visitors from showing them.

Well, this guy got 187 465 uniques in one week, does that count? He got featured on TV... so that helped a lot :)
