Do I need to worry about duplicate content penalty while publishing press releases, as the same press release being disseminated by a number of sites.
    thanks in advance

It's not duplicate content if the original content has already been indexed.

This is called content syndication and is perfectly acceptable in Google's eyes :)

NewsClerks, let me have your news site and your posted press release and I will tell you if it's ok or not.

Duplicate content is when you have written an article for your site and then proceed to publish it on other sites before that article has been indexed by google.

If you want to check if it's been indexed after a few days, copy a paragraph and put it into the Google search bar, if your page shows up then your article has been indexed as the original copy and I suppose you could say you are free to send it out all over the place.

After indexing this is called syndication or if you submit your article to article directories for links and don't place the article on your site then this is also known as syndication. if you use UAW then you can submit one article once and create around 1300 original versions of it and this also helps for links back to the site from original content.

    Hope that makes sense :)

A side note to this discussion is to avoid what is called "article spinning" or the practice of using software for rewriting an existing article to provide slightly different perspective on the topic. I the past these 'spun' articles were used on as many sites as possible for back-linking. Google's Panda will take swift action on this practice. Article syndication is the practice of submitting an article to different sites (not on your own, however), directories and blogs.

If you would let me know a little bit more about what type of 'news' you are trying to publish I may be able to point you to some resources. Part of my background is in news reporting. -Mike

Cyberdog1 has explained very clearly the reason. I would just like to add a common sense point, that usually in news related stuff, its really common to have repetition of things, and Google can very easily differentiate between the news stuff and the normal stuff, so just relax and submit your post!
