Should you buy a domain that has been dropped?

I am looking to buy aged domain with a PR and some traffic should I consider ones that have been dropped at some point in their history or avoid them like the plague? Would also appreciate a reason why! Thanks

Unless the domain has been banned from search engines, it's perfectly fine. Just note that some of them may have many backlinks that are helping them rank for a term you're not interested in for that domain, which will be a nightmare of an SEO job for you to fix.

Thanks for that Pixelrage, just one more question though - how would I know if the domain has been banned?

Try a site search - go to Google and type in:

    site:www.sitename.com

...if nothing shows up, then the site has probably been banned (assuming it was indexed in the past). It's too much effort to get a site re-included in most cases and I personally wouldn't bother with a banned domain, unless it was a premium one.

If you can buy it in auction before it actually drops (tdnam/snapnames) then I would say all is good and nothing should happen to the PR. If it actually drops where it loses its previous registration date then you may wanna be careful - it may lose its PR.

    Hello, we met again.

Dropped d0main will get little disadvantages, but if u want aged and pagerank d0mains, I gave u all that had been checked clearly with good backlink, n0 google banned, and also great name.

I think that you don`t have any advantages using such a domain. The PR drops anyway if you change the content. It`s not the domain name that ranks but the domain name and the content.

@georgu: thanks for your advise. . In seo side, I see that dropped d0main will get lower priority than aged and d0main with high pr. We'll see the results if we try. I tried that new d0main will get quick indexed, and also great keyword will give great SERP. Thx.

    Hi engkoh,

I was very pleased with your helpful service, I posted this thread as I had noticed in the buy/sell Domain forum that people would withdraw their offers on domains when they found out that they had been dropped - so, I wondered why and what other peoples take was on this. Will be in touch soon.

Meaning the anchor text of the backlinks?

    Use something like backlinkwatch.com

Generally speaking a dropped domain can only help. You take advantage of any backlinks they may have already built up.
