As as smoker, and yes i have tried to quit... (normally i manage it between cigarettes)......i am fed up at this new development about not smoking in public places, i cannot fathom the concept of not smoking in a pub/restaurant...or a night club.
I certainly dont like it when somebody who is half pissed on beer PREACHES to me about the rights and wrongs of smoking , as happened the other night.
Personally i do not drink, and would much rather see a ban on alchohol..
which in my mind causes health problems, violence, criminal damage...and drains the health service every friday night with the amount of stitches that are administered...let alone the 100's if not 1000's of deaths on the roads caused by drinking.

which, to me, far out weighs the concept of people suffering from passive smoking, or your clothes smelling of smoke. I know several people who cant eat a meal without a drink...or watch tv without a beer..or 2 ...or 4

do you think its right to ban smoking?...i wonder what it would do for the economy if we all gave up tomorrow?...i reckon that cigarette tax PAYS for 90% of the health service

personally i dont think either should be banned..they are adult vices....and as adults we are allowed to make our own choices.

I am looking for a domain name now a friend wants to use as a platform for this topic. She believes the statistics on which smoking bans have been based are questionable at best. That our civil liberties are being eroded and the next issue will be obesity.

As an allergic non-smoker I am not a fan of smoking but at the same time question my right to dictate to anyone else.

Any good domain names suggestions will be appreciated. We are looking for a good domain name to serve for this and other similar platforms.

I am not a fan of trying to impose my points of view upon anybody else...certainly dont like it when others try to do it to me...

A really dumbed down version of John Stuart Mill's ..on liberty... but good enough for a forum...you need a smoky bar to get into the finer points

I don't think they should outright ban smoking... but bans on smoking in public places (like restaurants here in California) was a good idea I think.

I don't care if people smoke... so long as I'm not forced to smoke with them.

    i agree with shawn.

i didn't like the idea of banning smoking in california restaurants and bars at first, but after the fact i started to like it. besides, it gives people an excuse to get up and walk outside for a bit to have a ciggie.

as far as drinking goes i think it shouldn't be banned. but, maybe harsher penalties for drunk driving should be put in place because it really is dangerous and a lot of people still see it as 'ok'. about half of my friends have DUI's and about 90% of them drive drunk at least sometimes. this should not be acceptable as it directly affects the lives of others.

on a side note, maybe they should leaglize (or unban) marijuana... far less dangerous than alcohol and ciggies (in my opinion)

traditions are less strong here, what with freedom of expression and all.

don't get me wrong, I'm not undermining the religion, i think that's just the natural evolution of a free society.

I think they should legalize *all* drugs personally (even though I don't do them). Prices for drugs would go way down. The government could add a 100% tax to them and they still would be cheaper than they are now.

The tax could pay probably fix all the current deficit problems the US has. Plus probably save about $100B/year they blow on the "War On Drugs".

Bottom line is people are going to do it if they want to regardless if it's illegal or not. The government should capitalize on that.

i agree with you shawn on the drugs thing. but i don't think 'all' drugs is a good idea, just 'most' drugs. in addition to making $ for the government, it would also open up whole new drug manufacturing industries which would create new jobs.

some drugs should be banned however (like crystal meth)...the last thing i want are meth heads running all around the streets all crazy ... i hate tweekers :)

so let me get this right...you wouldn't mind taking your kids to the park, where some guys are hanging around on speed..or crack, or possibly a nice meal, where some guy is jackin' up in the corner?
not sure about the implications of being stoned and driving.
    make drugs legal?..BAD IDEA

stop p*ss heads from smashing public phoneboxes and bus stations, ...fighting in bars and streets..puking all over the place, cluttering up hospitals and lets not forget the cost of policing all these idiots
    .. GOOD IDEA

dont remember a squad car outside a place where people were all smoking

People are going to do drugs regardless if they are legal or not. Can you think of anyone that would start doing crystal meth, heroin, crack or whatever else only if it was legal?

true...but making it legal would certainly up its profile on the streets

there is less chance of dealers being on the street if its illegal.

I dont mind if someone gets drunk in the confines of their own home, but i would like to see that off the streets too.

I'm waiting for when they ban smoking in the privacy of yer own home.

    Edit.

What really gets me though? THere's all this malarkey about smoking being bad; quit smoking; on and on. I would honestly try harder if:

Smoking patches didn't cost more than cigarettes
If I go to the doc for help with smoking (which I did) and he suggests wellbutrin or zyban to assist me, he has to lie and come up with a reason (anxiety, depression, whatever) to give me the drug, so my insurance will pay for it. Insurance does not pay for those who wish to quit.

It's bs. And don't get me started on non smokers lecturing smokers. I can and do go off on them without a problem!
